Response to Intervention is a tiered system of intervention strategies to aid students who are struggling, which occurs before special education referrals. RTI is important because a student who is in general education should not be referred for special education services as a first resort. All RTI information is research based, and provides differentiated instruction in the general education classroom. Furthermore, RTI gets rid of the "wait-to-fail" method by providing early interventions.
Goals of RTI:
All students acquire critical academic skills
Implement early academic intervention
Tier 1:
Instruction provided to all students in class
Tier 2:
Students who do not respond to core curriculum
Considered "at-risk" for academic failure
Supplemental instruction provided
Tier 3:
Students who do not respond to interventions at tier 1 or tier 2
